The District’s Pump Plants are equipped with sixteen multi-stage turbine pumps with right angle gear drives. These pumps are
powered by sixteen natural gas fired, internal combustion engines (four engines per plant). Plant 1 is equipped with four Waukesha 5790GL engines;
Plants 2 and 3 are each equipped with four Superior 2406G engines; and Plant 4 is equipped with three Superior 1706G engines and one Waukesha F-18.
In 2001, the energy operating cost of the plants using natural gas engines was compared to electricity and the results
are as follows:
|
|
-
Year Jan 2001 - Natural Gas - 450 therms per acre foot at an average cost of $0.43 per therm for a cost of $193.50 per acre
foot.
|
- Electricity - $1855.00 per acre foot.
|
As you can see, it is more cost effective to run the pumping plants on natural gas rather than electricity. Click here to see a generic well blueprint.
